Check if you qualify for a tax break worth up to £1,220. More than two million eligible couples miss out on this easy way to save on their tax bill. The marriage tax allowance allows a non-taxpaying spouse to shift 10% of their annual tax-free allowance to their basic-rate (20%) taxpaying partner. It's worth £252 this year, plus you can claim back up to four tax years, as long as you were eligible during that time - backdating can net a cheque for an extra £970. Pay for travel & mobile phone insurance too? See if a packaged account could be cheaper.  Only pay for one Amazon Prime account between two. We're not saying you should get Amazon Prime, but if you have it, you can legitimately link your Amazon account with someone else in your household - and this works whether you're married, partners or just flatmates. If you live with your partner but you're not married... seriously consider a cohabitation agreement. There's no such thing as common law partners in the UK legal system. While married/civil-partnered couples have certain rights, there's much less set in stone for those who are unmarried, even if you've lived together for years, have kids, a home, a car and a dog. If you split up, it can be a real nightmare, particularly if you own a property or other assets together. That's why it's best to formalise your relationship. It might not sound very romantic, but it may save a lot of stress and heartache later on if you sadly do break up. See cohabitation agreements. Get 1/3 off train fares when Two (travel) Together. A Two Together Railcard gets 1/3 off most off-peak fares for two named adults when travelling together - so get one with your other half and you can cut the cost of your love train(s). It's usually £30 for a year, but we've a code that gets a digital Two Together Railcard for £20 - see Cheap train tickets.  Combine your spending power and get 5% cashback for SIX months. Cashback credit cards pay you for spending, and the big payer is the Amex Platinum Everyday* (best to check eligibility chances first), which gives 5% cashback for the first three months (up to a max of £100) and up to 1% after. But couples can get six months at 5%. Here's how: You apply and make your partner your second cardholder, so you get the 5% cashback for the first three months. Then, just before your 5% ends, your partner applies, making you a second cardholder, and gets a further three months at 5% (though you must spend £3k+/year per card to get ANY cashback). However, DON'T use cashback as an excuse to spend more than you normally would, and ensure you set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month to avoid the 24.5% rep APR interest, which would wipe the gain. A movie and a meal isn't always a cheap date, but the 2for1 meerkat trick gets you the restaurant discount from Sun to Thu and the flicks on Tue or Wed. Buying a first home? Get TWO 25% boosts of up to £1,000/year. This is a no-brainer for anyone 18-39 planning to buy their first home. With a Lifetime ISA, the state adds 25% on top of what you save, which can mean a free £1,000/year. If you're in a couple, you can both save into a LISA and double the bonus. And even if one of you isn't a first-time buyer, the other can still do it. If your partner's struggling with card debt, you can shift their debt to your 0% card. But should you? The ultimate way to cut the cost of existing credit or store card debt is a balance transfer. This is where you get a new card that pays off existing card(s) for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. It means more of your repayments clear the debt, rather than just covering the interest, so you're debt-free quicker, possibly saving £1,000s. But if your partner's credit score means they're struggling to get a new 0% card, and you have a good credit score, one solution is to apply for a 0% card and shift their debt to it. Yet this needs very careful consideration. Do this and it legally becomes YOUR debt to pay off, even if you split up. Never be forced or guilt-tripped into doing this if it doesn't feel right - IF IN DOUBT, DON'T. But if you're in a trusting relationship and happy to help them, here's how: Step 1: The person with the debt should use our Balance Transfer Eligibility Calculator - which shows the 0% cards they're likely to be accepted for, if any. Step 2: If they've limited eligibility, then some lenders allow you to shift your partner's debt to your card. So again, use the eligibility calculator to see what YOU may be accepted for, then look for these brands... Barclaycard, First Direct and HSBC have all confirmed they allow this. Santander and Virgin Money do too, but with both, your partner needs to be added as a second cardholder first, and may face a limited credit check. While there can be perks, it's never a step to be taken lightly, no matter how well you think you know your other half. Financial abuse is when someone controls your finances or ability to earn money, so as to reduce your independence and force reliance. And, sadly, it's a form of abuse thousands in the UK suffer from. If a loved one is, for example, pressuring you to take out debt for them in your name, emotionally blackmailing you to pay their bills, or controlling access to your money, you could be a victim. Thankfully, financial abuse is legally recognised as a form of domestic abuse, and offenders can be prosecuted. Couples who share car insurance can often get cheaper cover. Adding your partner can slash car insurance costs - as long as they've a good driving record. This tip's useful when adding a responsible older driver if you're young, and can help partners cut costs too, as John emailed: "Got my renewal quote today - £368. You can both get up to £400 of travel, phone and breakdown insurance for £114 with a packaged bank account. Paying a monthly account fee can be a waste, yet done right - as a cheap way to buy insurance - it can be fruitful. Our top-pick packaged account for couples is Co-op Bank's Everyday Extra, as for £15/month (£180/year) you get worldwide travel insurance (up to age 79), plus smartphone insurance and UK and European breakdown cover - just add your partner as a joint account holder so they get the benefits too. It can be better NOT to share credit histories. No matter how deep your relationship, always be mindful when applying for a joint mortgage, loan, bank account and some utility bills, as this creates a financial link between you. TWO top credit cards, each with TWO powerful perks... 1. Choose free £25 cash OR free £25 at Sainsbury's 2. Then if needed, they're both TOP 0% spending cards too: up to 24 months 0% After a dearth of decent credit card deals during the pandemic, lenders are once again thirsting for your custom. And this week, it's the supermarket banks battling it out, with two top 0% spending cards getting better. In both cases the card providers are trying to get you to spend, but both can be worked to grab a freebie AND cut the cost of any essential borrowing... Step 1. Nab a freebie. There are now two cards available that offer freebies to accepted new customers, and have a market-leading 0% deal (or close to it). Choose from... a) New. M&S Bank's* credit card (always best to check your acceptance odds first) now gives £25 cashback to newbies who spend £100 on it within the first 90 days (it's then credited to your account within two months). You also get one reward point (worth 1p in M&S vouchers) per £1 of spending in M&S or per £5 of spending elsewhere. b) Sainsbury's Bank's* credit card (again, it's best to check acceptance odds first) also offers a bonus worth £25 - though you'll need to be a Sainsbury's shopper to get it. New cardholders get 500 Nectar points (worth £2.50) for each £35+ spent at the store in the first two months, up to a max 5,000 points (£25). You also get the normal two points (worth 1p) per £1 spent at Sainsbury's and one (worth 0.5p) per £5 elsewhere. With both of these cards, only use them for normal spending - it's not an excuse to spend more. Make sure to pay the balance off IN FULL, and you've grabbed the freebie. Or...   Step 2. Both cards are TOP 0% spending deals, so if you need to borrow, you can't do so cheaper than this. Used right, there's no cost at all to borrow here, as these cards offer up to 24 months interest-free. Yet even though it's free, only borrow if you NEED to. That means for a planned, affordable purchase (for example, replacing a faulty fridge) - not to fill in gaps in your income. If in doubt, don't borrow. The Sainsbury's Bank* card now gives 'up to' 24 months at 0% (was 23 months) - the joint-longest time at 0% - though the 'up to' means some poorer credit scores may be offered just 16 months 0%. However, if you check acceptance odds first and our eligibility calculator shows you're 'pre-approved', you'll definitely get the full 24 months. The M&S Bank* card gives 23 months at 0% (check acceptance odds), and is the longest 0% card that gives all accepted customers a DEFINITE 0% period. See full options in 0% Spending. If you do borrow on these cards, make sure you follow the golden rules... a) Pay at least the monthly min and stick within your credit limit, or you can lose the 0% and get hit with fees. b) Plan to clear the card (or balance-transfer) before the 0% ends, or these cards charge 21.9% rep APR (APR Examples). c) Don't use these cards to withdraw cash - it's not at 0%. Will applying for these cards affect my creditworthiness? Any full application leaves a mark on your credit file, even if you're rejected (hence why we say use our eligibility calculator first to see if you'll likely be accepted). Lots of applications in a short space of time can have a small, negative impact for a few months. Yet for most with decent credit histories, you could apply to one card - or even both - and it shouldn't be a problem. However, it's best avoided if you have an important credit application (for example, a mortgage) coming up imminently.

Base rate savings boost New. NS&I raises easy-access rates to 0.5% (but most should seek higher rates - up to 0.73%) A couple of weeks ago, the Bank of England announced it had increased the base rate for the second time in as many months - a jump to 0.5%. Rising base rates are usually heralded as helping savers, yet most banks DON'T pass on rises. NS&I - the Treasury-backed savings provider - bucked this trend last week, raising its easy-access rates to 0.5%. We know many like saving with NS&I, so here's how it compares... NS&I increases easy-access rates to 0.5% - but should you save with it? NS&I now pays 0.5% AER variable on its easy-access Direct Saver (min £1, max £2m) and Income Bonds (min £500, max £1m) accounts, up from 0.35%. The rise means these accounts now aren't terrible for those with large amounts of savings who want to keep it all in one place and have it as near to 100% protected as you can get. We say it's protected as money in NS&I is backed by the Treasury (so it's safe unless the UK itself goes bust, in which case we've all got bigger problems). But other UK-regulated banks have a savings safety guarantee, which means up to £85,000 per person's protected. So most should actually just chase the best rates... The top easy-access accounts beat NS&I - get up to 0.73%. With these accounts, you can pay in and withdraw cash whenever you want - but rates are variable, so you need to monitor them in case they drop. Till 8am today (Wed), Ford Money pays 0.73% AER. Or, Cynergy Bank pays 0.71% AER, though the rate includes a 0.41% fixed one-year bonus. Both let you save from £1. Or see full options in top easy-access savings. Able to lock cash away? Boost rates up to 1.66%. Put money in fixed-rate savings, and the rate you get is locked in, as is your money - you can't withdraw it within that time. Full options, incl longer fixes paying up to 2.2%, in top fixed savings, but in brief... - 1year fix: App-only Tandem is the top payer at 1.45% AER (min £1), or Habib Bank Zurich pays 1.41% AER and can be opened online (min £5,000). - 2year fix: SmartSave is the top payer at 1.66% AER (min £10,000). If you've less, Tandem pays 1.65% AER from £1. Is now a good time to fix? It's a tough call. City analysts predict further base rate rises in 2022, so it's likely newbies' fixed savings rates will rise too. Yet if you wait, your money's not earning as much (or any) interest. Hedging towards shorter fixes may be the best of both worlds, as you get rate certainty, but you're not locked in for too long if rates do rise. Can you boost interest further? With inflation running at 5%+, most savings accounts are actually 'losings' accounts. The specialist accounts below can help you max returns - but can you get 'em? - 50% bonus for many on universal credit or tax credits. Find out if you're eligible for Help to Save. - 25% bonus for first-time buyers aged 18-39. Open one ASAP - full info in Top Lifetime ISAs. - If you have expensive debts, paying them off often beats saving.
