Long-term SOCIAL TARIFFS for lower incomes On Universal Credit or similar benefits? Try a social tariff. Many providers offer special discounted social broadband tariffs, which give long-term cheap prices of usually £13/mth to £20/mth for 30Mb+. Add your postcode via the link above and, within your search results, you'll see the social tariffs local to you. Service ratings are done via a large, nationally representative YouGov survey, see our new broadband provider rankings. Slow broadband? Before switching, test your speed - is it the Wi-Fi or the connection? Run a speed check - first via Wi-Fi, then (if you can) by plugging your device into the router. Wi-Fi's a lot slower? Try our speed-boosters. At least 50% of customers must get the advertised speeds at peak times. Plus, all major providers (not locals) must also show your estimated minimum speed before you apply. You don't need to contact your current provider to switch. Under Ofcom's 'One Touch Switch' rules, your new provider handles it all, so it should be smoother. You'll be told when it's happening, and downtime is usually only about two hours. Most won't need an engineer - except if you're moving to or from Virgin, a local network, or getting fibre to the premises (FTTP), as that needs a new fibre cable installed into your home. Cashback site members can occasionally undercut deals. In some cases, the cashback can mean these sites undercut promos elsewhere, though sometimes the deal differs - so check carefully. More in Top cashback sites. Martin: Ban mid-contract broadband price hikes! Last week I told a committee of MPs: "The only thing that isn't obvious is why we don't just do the obvious and ban, at the very least, above-inflation mid-contract hikes." You can see evidence of the problem in our best buy table above. When we list prices, we have to include a price change each April, and then calculate an average price to try and aid comparison.  It's worse with Sky. Even though we know it also usually does April hikes, it uses a 'get-out-of-jail' free card - it can raise prices mid-contract without telling you in advance, as long as it lets you leave penalty-free within 30 days of notification. During the evidence session to MPs, I took my chance to explain how predictably disappointed I am in Ofcom's new-ish, flaccid 'disclose mid-contract price hikes in pounds and pence upfront' rule for broadband and mobiles. I presented the MPs' Committee with our powerful new research showing 75% of people pay more due to Ofcom's rules and 99% would be better off if above-inflation hikes were banned. While there, I also got to talk about broadband social tariffs and explain why too few get them:  Firms under-publicise them | They're not in comparison site results (barring ours, obvs) | Speeds are too slow  Plus, sitting next to me was Anne Pardoe of Citizens Advice, who suggested social tariffs should be done by switching to a voucher system. I loved that idea, and we will be supporting it.

Martin: 'It's the SWEET SPOT to compare energy prices, as finally your comparison result will show the real saving. Many can fix & save £200+. Check NOW!'  With the sun shining, it may seem weird to talk energy again. Yet this is the perfect moment. Most people in Eng, Scot & Wales saw their energy costs rise an average 13% last week. That's because if you're one of the 60% of homes on your firm's standard (not fixed or special) tariff, then your rates follow Ofgem's Price Cap. That Cap moves every three months, 1 July being the latest change. The big must-read message: Why now...? If you're on a standard tariff - or imminently will be when your fix ends - compare TODAY. While we've known prices will rise for weeks, finally the savings shown are against the new, higher Cap, so it's a true comparison. That's strengthened by the fact we're now halfway through the assessment period for the next (Oct to Dec) Cap, so we've a pretty good idea it'll stay at roughly the same high level. Plus, analysts' crystal balls aren't currently expecting much change in the Jan Cap either. So if a £250/yr saving is shown today, it is likely pretty realistic. When you compare the full Price Cap predictions with the the cheapest fixes - which let you lock in a rate 16% cheaper than the current Price Cap - those fixes look a no-brainer, if the analysts are right. Though, as always, your exact winner depends on location and use, so use our whole-of-market Cheap Energy Comparison to get your exact results. As an indication, here's the team with the best buys (and no, you don't need a smart meter for most of them)... Cheapest Smart prepay fix EDF Simply Fixed July27v2 12mth fix. Dual fuel or elec only | Monthly fixed Direct Debit, Monthly cash / cheque, smart prepay | £50/fuel early-exit fees | No smart meter required (though fine if you already have one) | Allows new and existing customers to switch. Save avg 2.3% compared with today's Prepay Price Cap.  We don't think this is a great deal as it's only slightly below the Cap, so it's only for those who really value price certainty.  What is MSE cashback? Some providers pay energy comparisons to facilitate the switch (at the same price as going direct). Unlike other sites, we don't hide tariffs that don't pay. We show them all, and when we get paid, we give you a chunk as cashback. So they're relatively cheaper for you, and more people are likely switch to them. Win-win. PS: We're beta testing our new Pick Me A Tariff tool within Cheap Energy Club, which may make things easier. It's early days, but if you want to try it, please do - we'd love your feedback. What if a variable deal comes up cheapest? There can be cheap variable deals that just undercut the cheapest fixes. So you may choose to go with one and cross your fingers it'll stay cheap (it can move any time). Yet it's worth asking yourself how much you're willing to pay for the certainty of no price hikes for a year or more. It's your call.   Already on a fix? Re-fixing right now isn't an automatic winner. Unlike people on the Cap, you're likely currently paying less than today's cheapest fixes, so you'd need to pay a premium to fix now. Whether that's worth considering depends on when your fix ends. If it has under 50 days to go, then at least you're free to switch, as they can't charge you early exit penalties. So if you're risk-averse and want the safety of locking in again, a comparison is worth a look. Yet if your fix has 50 or more days left to go, it'd feel odd to pay an exit fee in order to move to a more expensive tariff. So Martin says: 'My instinct (based on pure guesswork and without a crystal ball) is if your current fix is materially cheaper than you can fix for now, stick on it as long as you can, and hope new fixes will be a similar price or cheaper when you near your current fix's end. At the very least, you'll have saved in the meantime.' Very low user? A lower Standing Charge tariff may beat fixing for you. The daily charge just for the facility of gas or electricity makes up a huge chunk of many low users' bills. EDF's tracker tariff is essentially a Price Cap where the Standing Charges are discounted by £50/yr. It's good, but ONLY for very low users (eg, under roughly £80/mth use). A few customers may also be eligible for new limited trial low Standing Charge tariffs. PS: Watch Martin telling MPs the Standing Charge is a moral hazard. Specialist tariffs if you've got solar panels, an electric vehicle (EV), or are a sophisticated user. For most, a fix is the easy way to lock in a price. Yet there are specialist tariffs that may beat it - our solar panels energy tariffs, and EV tariffs guides are worth looking at. For sophisticated users, especially those with batteries, Octopus has two highly volatile tariffs which can sometimes be big winners when used right: Agile (electricity price changes every half-hour) and its dual-fuel or single-fuel Tracker tariff (price changes every day). Could it be cheaper to fix in a few weeks? Yes! It could be cheaper - or much more expensive. If the Middle East conflict properly ends, it's possible cheaper fixes will be available. Yet as you can now fix at far less than the current Cap, every day you wait is a day paying more. Focus on how risk-averse you are: the less you can afford big hikes, the safer it is to fix now. And if things radically changed in future and much cheaper tariffs became available, you could always pay your fix's early-exit fees and leave.  Struggling to afford my energy bills - what do I do?
